UP Economics Professor explains weak peso is good for the economy

It is a good news indeed for our fellow Filipinos who work abroad the weak peso exchange over dollar because this means more buying power for their dollar remittances.
This was opposed by the critics of President Rodrigo Duterte and said that a weak peso leads to high prices of commodities because of the high inflation.
But for Dr. Raul Fabella, former dean of UP School of Economics, it is not necessarily bad for the Philippine economy.

This stance of Fabella was explained by Van Ybiernas, La Salle Professor, where he posted it on his Facebook account for the information of the netizens.

According to him, the current status of peso would help industries in the Philippines by lessening the smuggling in the country because the import price is cheaper compared to the products in the country that would result to price of the products outside the country is cheaper if without tax, which is the main reason why there are smugglers.

However, the fall of peso, though the imported products are exempted from tax, will become expensive.

This will be an opportunity for the country to manufacture, even just for domestic consumption. Let’s not forget that products outside the country is more expensive than the products here. Or, it would be better to export the products that we manufactured because it is cheaper compared to the products outside the country.

This will create job opportunities for our fellow citizen.
