Lucio Tan offers to build Boracay’s 2nd drainage system

Billionaire Lucio Tan has offered to help the government in rehabilitating Boracay by building the island’s second drainage system, two government officials revealed.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said Tan, who also supplies water in Boracay, has sent the letter to the concerned agencies regarding his offer.

He said the business tycoon offered to build a drainage system that also connects to a wastewater treatment facility, ensuring that the water that comes out to the sea is clean.

Jonas Leones, an undersecretary at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, said they have already sent a response to Tan, asking him to give details on his offer.

Leones said only Boracay Island Water Company, Inc., the other water supply company, has a drainage system on the island. This drainage system, he stressed, is only for rainwater.

But business establishments, he said, connected their pipes to Boracay Water, instead of the sewerage system, the reason why discharges also come out of the drainage system into the sea.

Kasi ‘yung mga establishments, doon kumonek instead of sa sewers,” said Leones.

The Environment official said the government and Boracay Island Water Company, Inc. agreed to cut all these connections to the existing drainage system.
