AirHelp is a part of the Association of Passenger Rights Advocates or APRA, whose mission is to promote and protect passengers’ rights. It has been highly reviewed for excellent service. Their website is helpful with a good FAQ and nice separation between grievances, such as cancellations, delays, overbooking, etc.

When AirHelp announced its ranking of 132 airports across the world, these following airports earned the lowest marks, based on data assessing on-time performance, public reviews of quality of service and passenger sentiment on social media. Suffice to say, these airports have provided passengers plenty to complain about. And here are the 10 ‘worst’ airports in the world!

10. EINDHOVEN AIRPORT

With an On-time performance score of 5.9, Quality of service: 7.2 and a Passenger sentiments of 5.1, a total score of 6.39 out of 10 is given for Eindhoven Airport.

Although Eindhoven in the Netherlands is not the absolute worst of the airports analyzed by AirHelp—it’s certainly not the best either. In fact, On the Eindhoven Airport Facebook page, you’ll definitely see a myriad of complaints about bad customer service, long security lines and general disarray. Also, the number of complaints about noise pollution around Eindhoven Airport has increased. The past quarter saw 2,000 more complaints than in the same period last 2021.

9. BORDEAUX-MERIGNAC AIRPORT

Bordeaux-Merignac Airport is the 9th worst airport in the world. It scored 7.4 when it comes to on-time performance, 5.6 in quality of service, 5.1 in passenger sentiments, with an overall score of 6.37 out of 10.

The main complaints about this airport were the small size with lack of seating for travelers. To top it off, with the recent troubles of staff strikes cancelling many flights, you may want to consider some alternatives if you are planning to fly through Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport. Aside from that, complaints about this airport frequently target unclean restrooms, long security lines, rude staff members and an overall unwelcoming feeling.

8. EDINBURGH AIRPORT

A total overall score of 6.29 out of 10 was given by Airhelp to Edinburgh Airport. It was based on their on-time performance score of 6.66, quality of service score of 7.0 and the passenger sentiment of 1.8.

People who have flown through Edinburgh say it’s difficult to navigate, mismanaged and chaotic. Travelers also point out that the airport is severely lacking in seats to accommodate passengers as they wait, so many people end up sitting on the ground and it’s definitely not ideal. That is why the airport received pretty awful marks for passenger sentiment, which dragged down its overall score.

7. BORYSPIL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Boryspil International Airport scored 4. 3 on its On-time performance, 8.0 for its quality of service and a passenger sentiments score of 4.9. Airhelp has given the airport a total overall score of 6.03, making them the 7th worst airport in the world!

Travelers have griped about it being difficult to connect to this airport’s Wi-Fi and to find drinking fountains to fill up their water bottles. Another common complaint is the shoddy restrooms, which have been described as “smelly” with “toilets which were really dirty.”

6. MANCHESTER AIRPORT

Manchester Airport has a total overall score of 5.95 based on their on-time performance score of 6.1, quality of service score of 6.6, and the passenger sentiments score of 2.6 that is mainly the reason why Manchester Airport is the 6th worst airport in the world!

Passengers really like to complain about Manchester Airport and most recently, people have been grumbling about the fact that Manchester now charges a fee for passenger drop-offs, so even those who aren’t actually stepping foot inside the airport have something bad to say about it. Other travelers say the airport doesn’t have enough staff to keep up with the number of passengers traveling through it, which creates long lines and lots of frustration.

5. STOCKHOLM BROMMA AIRPORT

Despite Sweden regularly being named one of the happiest countries in the world, the country’s Stockholm Bromma Airport has caused quite a lot of headaches for travelers. Travelers often complain that the airport is tiny, which means there are few places to sit when things get busy, although the quality of service has been rated higher because of the same reason, since a smaller airport also means quicker check-in and security procedures.

Stockholm Bromma Airport scored 4.4 for their on-time performance, 7.6 for the quality of service, and 5.1 for passenger sentiments, with a total overall score of 5.91, making them the 5th worst airport in the world!

4. PARIS ORLY AIRPORT

With their on-time performance score of 5.3, quality of service of 6.8, and passenger sentiment score of 4.1, a total overall score of 5.83 was given to Paris Orly Airport by Airhelp based on the survey they conducted.

Passengers are less than impressed with Paris Orly Airport, ranking it one the worst in Europe and 4th globally! Overpriced food and unhelpful or even rude staff appear to be the continuing theme of passenger reviews and feedback, dragging Paris Orly so far down the list. Aside from that, some of the most common complaints about Orly include that it’s crowded, not welcoming, disorganized and somewhat difficult to navigate.

3. LYON-SAINT-EXUPERY AIRPORT

On-time performance score of 6.1, 5.8 for the quality of service, and passenger sentiment score of 4.2. A total of 5.78 out of 10 was given to Lyon-Saint-Exupery Airport.

Although there’s no doubt that passengers admire the design and architecture of Lyon-Saint-Exupery, but this airport lacking in terms of technology during the check-in process, long lines, unhelpful and unapproachable French staff drags them for being the 3rd worst airport in the world. In fact, there’s a passenger that made a review on this airport and it says there’s a bunch of completely useless staff in this area. And even added that a child can do a better as compared to them.

2. LONDON STANSTED AIRPORT

The airport was once named worst in the UK and has since climbed the global ranks. Stansted Airport has been ranked the second-worst airport in the world for delays. With an on-time performance score of 6.2, 5.8 for the quality of service, and a score as low as 1.1 for passenger sentiment, Airhelp has given London Stansted Airport a total overall score of 5.53 out of 10.

From “repetitive” announcements over loudspeakers, car parking issues, airport costs and missed transfers, travelers had a lot to say about their experience at London Stansted Airport. They complain that the lines for check-in and security are always incredibly long and that it takes forever to get your bags once you land. While some of these issues are uncontrollable, some passengers are so passionate about the airport experience that they have taken to Trust Pilot to slam Stansted for not providing the experience they were hoping for.

1. KUWAIT AIRPORT

On-time performance: 4.1. Quality of service: 7.0. Passenger sentiments: 3.9. Because of these scores, Airhelp has given Kuwait Airport a total overall score of 5.40, making it the worst airport in the world!

Travelers flying through here noted that it was disorganized and not as clean as they would have liked, and that they felt the staff was not very friendly. Aside from that, Kuwait airport has a 2 over 10 rating on Skytrax, with some passengers complaining about a horrible smell in the airport and ‘unprofessional and slow boarding’. Terrible and outdated food court, barely any shopping, over crowded, lack of seating, are also some of the issues of Kuwait Airport. Travelers aren’t happy about how Kuwait Airport is getting worse, despite Kuwait supposedly being one of the richest country on earth.
